Biography

Conny Sommer was born in Hamburg in 1963. His musical education began at age 9, and through numerous detours led to percussion.

He studied musicology with an emphasis on ethnomusicology in Hamburg. Graduated in 1994.

During his period of study, Conny travelled to Cuba, Puerto Rico, Spain, Columbia and Guinea to broaden his musical horizons. (and to observe the mating habits of young latin girls)

Since 1989 Conny has been working as a live and studio musician, private teacher, professor and author in a wide range of contexts.

He has worked live or for CD productions for:

  • as Sideman in the Flamenco scene with, among others: Amparo de Triana, Juan Andres Marin, Manolo Sevilla, Miguel Perez, Miguel Iven, Vivien Baer, Elva y Tomás, Andreas Germek, Radio Tarifa (as Guesst) and as Member of the Group Matamá as opening act for Guitarist Tomatito.
  • Outside of the flamenco scene with, among others: Mehmet Ergin, Nassler& Schneider, Cathrin Pfeiffer, the NDR- Bigband, Dieter-Thomas Kuhn, Chris Jones, Matamá, the Fehlfarben, the Groove- Chor, the Disco Boys, the Marching- Band Schräg, and Comedy-artist Jan- Christoph Scheibe.
  • in the Musicals "Buddy" and "The Lion King".

He has taught as music professor:

  • in the Hamburg conservatory in the pop and school music departments.
  • in the Lola-Rogge school for dance and gymnastics in Hamburg
  • in the institute for extended education for teachers
  • in the AFS (Arbeitskreis für Schulmusik), Hamburg

As author:

  • 1999 published the Instruction Book for Cajon (english edition 2001)
  • 2003 Released the instructional DVD "Cajon" in german and english (NTSC version for USA and Japan 2005)
  • writes a monthly Cajon workshop article in the trade magazine "Drums and Percussion" which is mostly read by those silly looking guys who walk around in public with drumsticks in their back pockets.
