In this chapter I will illustrate pop grooves with a continuous bass drum, which can be heard every weekend in numerous discos, blaring out of cars and forming the temple of modern dance culture. Everyone knows the mid-priced older-model car, which, when driving by, not only emanates a loud muffler sound, but also drones with the unignorable "boom boom boom".
I have already described the main feature of this music: everything revolves around a continuous bass drum in a pumped-up tempo, usually accompanied by strange machine-like voices, shrill synthesizers and computer-generated echo effects. Brutal breaks round out the sound picture and bring a bit of life into a rather monotone-structured music which is completely produced on the computer and sounds like it.
This music also has its appeal, and for those who like it (I am also one of them!), you can see how nice and powerful house rhythms can sound on the cajón.
Since these rhythms are also poly-rhythmic, I have used the same notation as that of the bossa nova (see page 61). Friends of modern dance music: Sit down, pump it up, have fun.
